Scene Development

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

Below is a relatively early version of the scene, in this version only basic cubes were used to represent the buildings in the town to get an idea the rough planned layout and to see how it looked through the camera lens. Also for the cliff edge, a mega scan asset was used that was later replaced with a part of the landscape which had been sculpted. Another thing about this early version was that in the background, the landscape was sculpted to create some mountains behind the main assets being used as it was easier than copying loads of different assets of the canyons and placing then behind each other (which later discovered that I didn't even need to do).

As the scene progressed on, the sculpted landscape in the background were removed and the cliffs to the right had been replaced with the individual rock columns (from a desert landscape pack) which was done to create a more broad and wider landscape and vanishing point instead of the narrow original narrow one. Some bumpy spots were also added with rocks sticking out of them as seen on the right, as well as the floor now starting to become uneven to make it look more like sand formation. (The reason the cliff at under the camera is missing is because the file of the asset was deleted before the screenshot was taken).

Then the texture was added to the ground and started sculpted even more rocky areas in the landscape to try and make a more interesting environment.

In the image below, the cliff under the camera had been sculpted and painted the textures on the landscape such as wet sand and grass to create a much more dynamic and realistic looking landscape and got rid of the rock assets on right.

Another thing which had been moved in this scene was the lighting which had moved multiple times throughout the course of putting this scene together in order to try and capture the best possible lighting and shadows.

Here the town and landscape were almost at a finished state.

This is the final version (for the previz at least anyway). The changes made here are the canyons again on the left, in order to make them look like they get smaller in the distance, they were simply scaled down. The rock columns on the right were moved into a similar position to how they were originally as it looked made the landscape look much nicer in the shot.

The lighting also had another update here as the light was moved over to the left and lowered it a bit more to create a much more evening look instead of the late afternoon look that was previously present. The light reflecting off the wet sand was something else that looked really nice in with this version of the lighting as it made the sound look far more dynamic and interesting. lastly, the fog was increased to create a depth the the landscape and to smooth out the landscape's vanishing point, making it much easier on the eyes.
