To make the grunge map which I used on the surface of my coffee table, Download grunge paint brushes and load them into photoshop. From their, open a new file in photoshop and add a new layer. Use the corner paint brush and left click in the bottom left then create a new layer and rotate the paint brush and then click in the top right.
After that, use the eraser tool to get rid of the hard edges and the dark black areas (so that the top of the coffee table doesn't look too dirty). Then create a 3rd layer and select a different brush and turn the opacity down (I turned it down to about 20ish) and then left click in the middle of the canvas.
Then in 3DS Max, I have 2 different materials for the coffee table the stand is ID 1 and the top is ID 2. The stand is made of a less reflective material with the reflection glossiness at 0.7 and the Fresnel IOR at 2.
The top material is a glossy reflective material so the glossiness is at 1 Place the Grunge map into the material editor and attach it to an output map which goes to the reflection glossiness of the reflective material. From there, use the RGB offset and level to determine how much grunge will show up on the table top (I personally have mine set to 0.35).
